Don’t get Flummoxed by the Firmness!

Finding the right bed for your body and sleep habits

After more than 90 years in the local bedding industry, Edblo has been supplying South African families with the best quality mattresses for generations.

It goes without saying that Edblo knows the secret to find the best mattress to fit your individual needs!

While there are various aspects and features to consider when purchasing a new bed, choosing the correct firmness of the mattress is by far the most important.

It has been scientifically proven that the human body needs some resistance to the surface it sleeps on. A firmer mattress will ensure the skeleton supports the body, allowing your muscles to relax and improving circulation.

Moreover, when you sleep your brain will allow for automatic adjustments to counter any misalignment of the body. If you choose to sleep on the wrong mattress, it may cause your body to have to adapt too much throughout the night, leaving you exhausted, stiff, and achy the next morning.

Considering your favourite sleeping position can go a long way in determining what firmness of mattress you require.

If you prefer sleeping on your back, you will most likely require a mattress that offers firmness and support. A mattress that is too soft will allow your body to sink in and cause back pain. On a scale of 1-10, the perfect range of firmness for your mattress would be 5-7.

Side-sleepers often endure discomfort and pain in their hip joints and shoulders.

Mattresses that are a bit softer than those ideal for back-sleeper are advised, as these provide for equal distribution of pressure on the body while asleep.

Side-sleepers should choose a mattress firmness range of around 3-6.

The most important thing for stomach-sleepers is to provide an equal distribution of weight across the entire body as your torso will apply the most pressure to the mattress. If the mattress is too soft, your spine will curve causing back pain.

Stomach-sleepers will want to look for mattress firmness in the 5-7 range.

Your weight also plays a role in deciding the firmness of your mattress. Heavier people will experience more pressure points on their back, and ideally, you want to choose a firmer mattress option to adjust for sinkage.
