It’s time for bed!
Do you find yourself playing tug of war when it is time for the kids to go to sleep?
Sleep is so important for your child, but it can be hard to get them to go to bed on time, right?
We know that learning is better, after a good night’s sleep, so we want to make sure you’re fully
equipped to take on the new school year with an abundance of information.
So here is our first tip: It is time to establish a bedtime routine.
Why is this so important?
We get it, life is hectic and as parents, you are juggling a lot. But consider this; establishing a bedtime routine is essential for your child’s development. Studies have shown that children with a consistent bedtime tend to fall asleep faster, sleep for longer and wake up less during the night.
It also helps with cognitive development. When you engage in calming activities with your kids like reading before bed, it supports their language development and academic success- a win-win right? And how could we forget emotional security? Having a predictable routine gives kids a sense of security.
It makes them feel comfortable and safe, making it easier for them to get to bed without anxiety, because an anxious child makes for an anxious parent. So, aside from the much-needed break you need, a bedtime routine also helps your kids.
How do you build a bedtime routine?
Building a bedtime routine doesn’t have to be complicated and should include four important steps that should be performed at the same time every night. Consistency is key!
Here is how you can start:
- Turn screens off: An hour before it is time to get into bed, dim the lights and say goodbye to devices. This signals that it is time to start winding down.
- Tick off the two ‘B’s: Bath and brushing teeth. Having a warm bath can help relax your child’s body and brushing teeth, let’s face it, it is just good hygiene.
- Create a calming environment: Location is everything, so make sure the room is dark, cool and quiet.
- Soothing activities: For the younger kids, reading a book or singing lullabies together is a great way to signal the end of the day. For the older children, encourage them to read a book on their own.
After reading all of that, you might feel overwhelmed but don’t worry, after just a few nights you will see a big difference.
